In consultation with local cricket communities, Cricket NSW and many of our associations, it is recommended that cricket clubs and associations in areas that will be affected by Tropical Cyclone Alfred prioritise safety for players and volunteers alongside safely securing their cricket venues.
A collaborative decision has been made that all competitions administered by Cricket NSW in the areas covered by the Tropical Cyclone Warning will not be played this weekend to ensure the safety of all players, officials and volunteers.
This course of action has been proactively followed by many other associations that do not have their administration managed by CNSW.
“It is strongly recommended that club and association officials, employees and volunteers think safety first when considering any cricket activities before, during and after the expected cyclone event,’’ Cricket NSW CEO Lee Germon said.
“Based on expert advice, this includes the protection of property and facilities, with the covering of pitches discouraged.
“The advice not to cover pitches is for safety reasons – both for residents and housing around venues and for club officials and volunteers.”
“Cricket NSW also strongly recommends all other cricket competitions be cancelled in the warning zone areas and that all cricket venues safely secure their immediate surrounds.”
“Everyone at Cricket NSW is thinking of everyone in the affected areas during this time.”
Safety tips before the weather event:
- Secure any loose furniture items that may become airborne with high winds – if possible, move outdoor furniture to a protected area
- Remove any temporary awnings etc.
- If safe and practicable to do so, remove any shadecloth/non-structural coverings from outdoor areas
- Where possible, check gutters and downpipes to ensure that roof and ground water is able to run away from your club
- Sandbag low lying areas that may provide an opening for water inundation (including doors from outdoor decks/balconies etc.)
- Ensure motor vehicles are moved away from low lying areas
- Secure any equipment racks to prevent equipment from becoming airborne
- Follow all directions from relevant authorities
