Maddinson, Shaw to lead NSW Blues in 2026-27 season

Maddinson is an experienced and proven leader having captained at domestic and Big Bash League level throughout his 16-year playing career, including six first-class matches for the Blues during the 2015-16 season.  

A respected figure in the NSW squad, he will work closely with the Blues coaching team to embed a distinctive playing style in the four-day format. 

Maddinson, NSW's 117th Sheffield Shield captain, missed the Blues’ 2025-26 campaign with illness, but he has returned to full health and fitness. 

Shaw, who becomes the Blues' 37th one-day captain, is a rising star in Australian cricket, as shown by his recent Australia A selection and impressive performances for New South Wales and the Sydney Sixers.  

The white-ball appointment recognises his leadership potential and provides an exciting opportunity to further develop his captaincy credentials. 

The duo will be supported by vice-captain Sean Abbott alongside other senior members of the team, including Jack Edwards, who has stepped back from New South Wales captaincy duties to focus on his performance and workload management.

Nic Maddinson, NSW Blues' Sheffield Shield captain, said:  

"Captaining the NSW Blues is a huge privilege, and I'm incredibly thankful for the opportunity to lead the Sheffield Shield team this season. 

"Being entrusted with the New South Wales captaincy is something I don't take for granted, and I look forward to working alongside the playing group and coaching staff throughout the summer. 

"The Blues have a long, rich history, and it's an honour to join a list of incredible players who have led this team over the years." 

Lachlan Shaw, NSW Blues' One-Day captain, said: 

"I'm so excited to be leading the Blues' one-day team this season, and I'm immensely grateful for the opportunity. 

"We have a seriously talented playing group at the Blues, and I'm confident we have the makings of a team that can push for titles. 

"I can't wait to kick off our title defence when the One-Day Cup campaign commences next week." 

The Blues' One-Day Cup campaign commences Tuesday, September 22nd, facing Queensland in Brisbane, while the team's first Sheffield Shield match starts on Thursday, October 8th, playing Tasmania at Cricket Central.
