Parent/Spectator Behaviour

The Cricket NSW Code of Conduct binds all Player Support Personnel, which includes parents and other supporters, to the same standards of conduct that we expect from players. This includes adhering to the Spirit of Cricket and all of the matters set out in clause 5.1 of the CNSW By-Laws. Breaches of the Code of Conduct can be reported to the Commissioner in accordance with the procedures.

Additionally, through the Terms and Conditions of Player Registration for the 2023-24 season parents have agreed to adhere to the standards contained in our Integrity Framework, which is designed to ensure cricket remains a safe, inclusive and welcoming sport.  There is no place in our sport for abuse, whether between players, parents, administrators or officials.

Unfortunately, from time to time we receive reports about poor parent or spectator behaviour that can have a negative impact on others in the cricket community. CNSW views appropriate parental behaviour as a critical part of the CNSW safeguarding children and young people framework in keeping our young people safe in our sport.

There are fantastic campaigns raising awareness of these unfortunate instances and the effect on children, two of which are provided below:

“Let Kids Be Kids”:  https://www.playbytherules.net.au/let-kids-be-kids

“I Love To Watch You Play”: https://ilovetowatchyouplay.com/

Abusive behaviour by parents and spectators will not be tolerated and CNSW may deal with these complaints under the Integrity Framework. Instances of repeated offensive language, abuse of players, other parents, team officials or umpires could lead to suspensions from attending any cricket across New South Wales. Particularly, the offence of ‘serious harassment’ carries a minimum sanction of a 12-month suspension. These penalties are designed to ensure that cricket remains a safe environment and can be enjoyed by all.

Clubs and Associations who would like more information or support to educate your communities around these expectations are welcome to reach out to the Integrity Unit at integrity@cricketnsw.com.au.
