Metro Cricket Council driving community cricket wins across Sydney

When Cricket NSW established the Metro Cricket Council (MCC, the Council) this year, it was a bold step into a new era of cricket governance in Sydney. Merely six months after the Council first convened in April this year, the results have exceeded expectations.

Formed to strengthen collaboration between local cricket associations and Cricket NSW, the MCC has already made a significant impact. The Council has convened four meetings in the last few months, focusing on strategic priorities raised by representatives from metro community cricket associations during the inaugural Metro Cricket Forum back in May this year. These discussions have tackled critical areas such as government relations and infrastructure, school engagement strategies, the public perception of cricket, and governance support for volunteers.

The formation of the MCC had come off the back of recommendations from the NSW Districts Cricket Association’s (NSWDCA) Future Directions Project which was launched in August 2024.  The review was conducted in collaboration with the NSWDCA Committee and metro associations, culminating in the members voting to dissolve the NSWDCA at their Extraordinary General Meeting in February this year.

Identified from community nominations, assessed via a skills matrix and appointed by the CNSW Board, the Council’s make up is representative of the community it serves.  This includes five of the members being female, chair Matina Moffitt among them, and two members with South Asian backgrounds, signalling the greater involvement in cricket from those sections of the community.

As a result of MCC’s recommendations, several impactful initiatives have already been rolled out:

  • Monthly Club Development Reports: These reports provide clubs and associations with insights into school cricket activities, upcoming grants, regional highlights, and participation trends—empowering volunteers to work with CNSW staff to develop strategies to better connect with potential new players.
  • Facility Audit Process: A new approach to the national facility audit which will incorporate the local knowledge of community players and volunteers, ensuring future infrastructure strategies continue to address the areas that need the most support.
  • Volunteer-Friendly Marketing Tools: The Cricket NSW marketing page and promotional assets have been redesigned to be more accessible and useful for grassroots volunteers.

These streamlined initiatives and other recommendations have brought in a notable rise in numbers in participation across all levels of community cricket in metro Sydney compared to the same time last year:

These figures reflect the power of collaboration between Cricket NSW, the MCC, and the dedicated network of club and association volunteers. Together, they are building a stronger, more effective, and inclusive cricket community across Sydney.

Moffitt, who has been a celebrated community cricket volunteer and is now the first ever Chair of the MCC, says that the Council has set, clear, achievable goals and their diverse perspectives are yielding desired results.

“It’s a privilege to lead an advisory body guiding the metro cricket community into a new chapter of governance. I’m deeply appreciative of the MCC and its members, whose unwavering commitment to excellence continues to inspire.”

“The success of our recent initiatives—reflected in the growing participation across community cricket in metro Sydney—signals a promising future of greater efficiency and sustained growth. I’m energised by the momentum and proud to contribute to this positive transformation.”
