Cheatle to lead Breakers

The NSW Breakers will embark on their 2025/26 Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) campaign under new leadership, with fast bowler Lauren Cheatle appointed captain and wicketkeeper-batter Tahlia Wilson confirmed as vice-captain.

Cheatle steps into the captaincy as the 33rd captain of the NSW Women’s team, after serving as vice-captain under English import Georgia Adams last season, bringing with her nearly a decade of experience in the Breakers set-up.

The 26-year-old left-arm quick from Bowral debuted for NSW as a 16-year-old in 2015, helping the team secure four WNCL titles, including last year’s championship. Beyond her state achievements, Cheatle has represented Australia internationally, making her T20I debut in 2016, her ODI debut in 2017, and earning her Baggy Green in 2023.

Wilson’s elevation to vice-captain reflects her standing as one of the Breakers’ most consistent and influential players. A two-time Belinda Clark Medallist and three-time WNCL Player of the Season for NSW, she was the standout of the 2024/25 campaign, finishing as both the competition’s leading run-scorer and the WNCL Player of the Year.

The pair will work closely with head coach Peter Clarke, who joined the Breakers on a three-year deal earlier this year, as the side looks to build on last season’s drought-breaking championship.

“It’s an incredible privilege to be named captain,” said Cheatle.

“I grew up in the NSW pathway and have always looked up to the greats who wore the sky blue before me, so to now be in a position to lead this team is really special.

“My journey in cricket hasn’t been straightforward, but those experiences have shaped me and made me value every opportunity I get.

“This group means a lot to me — we’ve got a great mix of experience and emerging talent, and I believe our strength lies in how we play for each other. There’s a real hunger in the squad and we’re all excited to get the season underway and defend our title.”

Head of Elite Female Cricket Leah Poulton said the pair’s appointments were a fitting recognition of their contributions and leadership credentials.

“Lauren has shown tremendous resilience and growth throughout her career, and this is a well-deserved opportunity for her to step into the captaincy.

She has been an integral part of the Breakers for nearly a decade and brings both experience and a calm, composed presence that will serve the team well.

“Tahlia has been one of the Breakers’ most reliable performers in recent times, and her elevation to vice-captain is a natural progression. She has earned enormous respect within the group through her consistency and leadership, and we’re excited to see her take on this role.”

The Breakers are in an excellent position to continue building on the foundations laid last season. It’s an exciting time for the group as they look to defend their WNCL title.”

NSW will play two 50-over matches against ACT at Cricket Central on September 17 and 19 before beginning their WNCL title defence against Victoria at CitiPower Centre on September 26.
