Week 17 – ‘The Opening Spell'

Gordon Women's District Cricket Club's Olivia Callaghan representing NSW // Cricket Aus

First ball – Remember the name!

Olivia Callaghan, from Gordon Women’s Cricket Club’s, put in an all-time performance against Penrith at Killara Park on Sunday.

The prodigious NSW Pathways representative opened for the Deers and carried her bat for an unbeaten 135* runs from 136 deliveries.

Shortly after, Callaghan was celebrating a third wicket with ball in hand. Her spell of 3-15 was the pick of the bowling figures for the fixture, and she snared a catch! Gordon would triumph by 140 runs.

Callaghan is no stranger to record-breaking performances, having last season scored 200* in a 466-run opening partnership for Gordon's second-grade outfit.

Second ball – Two Blues, two tons!

Blake Noorbergen and Nitesh Samuel, from Parramatta’s third-grade outfit, scored a century each in their run-chase against UNSW.

Samuel, who came in at first drop, managed 102 runs from 158 balls, while Noorbergen tallied 109 from 112 deliveries.

The pair finished unbeaten, as did Parramatta, who reached their target with seven wickets in hand.

Third ball – Swooping season!

Western Suburbs ran out 74-run victors in their fourth-grade clash with Penrith at Blick Oval and with it, moved into second position on the competition ladder.

James Barwise was the star for the Magpies, collecting bowling figures of 7/29 from 25.4 overs. Barwise was deservedly named ‘Player of the Week’ for his club.

Fourth ball – Dharmini does it again!

Bankstown Sports Women’s Cricket Club’s Dharmini Chauhan scored her second match-winning century of the season, reaching 109 (not out) from 101 balls against Sydney University in their first-grade encounter.

Despite going down, this was a momentous occasion for the Students, as they competed in the first women’s match on University Oval no.1!

Fifth ball – Family 5fa’s?

  • UTS North Sydney siblings, Alex Mavros (3-11) and Sophia Mavros (2-8), combined to take down Campbelltown Camden in their second-grade clash at Raby Sports Complex.
  • Madison Rutherford (3-34) and Aleisha Rutherford (2-27) collectively claimed five wickets, though their Bankstown second-grade side fell short against Sydney at Bankstown Oval.

Sixth ball – Bekis Brilliance!

Gordon’s Jamie Bekis plundered 124 runs to steer the Stags to victory against Mosman on day two of their second-grade meeting at Chatswood Oval on Saturday.

Bekis’ 200-ball innings included 16 4’s and a 6!

Second Over

First ball – All-rounders!

  • Manly Warringah’s Elizabeth Cambridge snared three wickets (3-14) before scoring an unbeaten 63* to guide her Waratahs to a second-grade win over Sydney University.
  • Aditi Shidore carried her bat, scoring 77* for Campbelltown Camden in their Brewer Shield match against St George-Sutherland. Shidore would take 2-34 but the Slayers would prove too strong in their chase, winning by four wickets.
  • UTS North Sydney Brewer Shielder, Sameeksha Kuncham, finished with figures of 4-9 before scoring an unbeaten 36* to overcome Parramatta on Sunday.

Second ball – Rep for a reason!

NSW Breaker and Sydney Thunder pacer, Ebony Hoskin, grabbed five wickets (5-36) in an away win over Penrith. The emerging fast bowler took the wickets of both opposition openers, including the Penrith captain and vice-captain.

Third ball – A team in form!

St George are 11-0 in the Belvidere Cup this season! If Blake Macdonald isn’t pummeling bowling attacks, Tom Vane-Tempest is behind the stumps rewarding his.

In the Saints latest win, Vane-Tempest pouched five catches and took a stumping to send six Sutherland batsmen back to the sheds.

Fourth ball – Fourth-grade 5fas!

It’s too hard to highlight one, so here’s five of the best bowling performances from around the fourth-grade grounds on Saturday:

  • Will Skinner (Mnaly Warringah) 6-42 against Randwick Petersham
  • Yash Singh (Fairfield-Liverpool) 5-28 against Campbelltown Camden
  • Jaden Sequeira (Northern District) 5-34 against Eastern Suburbs
  • Stephen Wark (St George) 5-43 against Sutherland
  • Muhammad Talha (Bankstown) 5-47 against Sydney University

Fifth ball – Gillies grabs nine!

It’s no surprise Parramatta are currently undefeated in the David Sherwood Cup. Their skipper is scoring fifties and taking 9fa’s!

Liam Gillies notched 53 runs from 49 deliveries on the first day of play against UNSW at Grahame Thomas Oval. This past Saturday, Gillies collected figures of 5-18 and 4-29 to secure bonus points for his Two Blues.

Sixth ball – Brewer Shield bowlers relish season resumption!

  • Caitlin Schofield claimed 5-15 to lift her St George-Sutherland side over the line against Campbelltown Camden. The Slayers now sit in sixth with three regular rounds to go. The Brewer Shield has a six-team finals series.
  • Penrith defeated Sydney University by 93 runs, with Karly Woods taking season best-bowling figures of 5-16. Penrith are placed in ninth and need to win all remaining fixtures to have a shot of finals qualification.
  • Phoebe Laws collected 5-23 to lead the Rangers to victory over Sydney at Birchgrove Oval. Northern District sit in second but have only lost one fixture all season.
