Fourteen players will form the ACT/NSW Country squad to compete at the Male Under 17 National Championships in Mackay, Queensland, from 30 September to 10 October.

Like NSW Metro, the squad was selected following the Under 17 State Challenge over three days in Coffs Harbour, that concluded Sunday.

The side will be captained by Newcastle opening batsman Jack Hartigan and coached by Cricket NSW Coaching and Talent Specialist for the Riverina and Western zone, former Blues off-spinner Greg McLay.

Male Pathway and Talent Manager for Cricket ACT, Michael Delaney, will be the Assistant Coach.

ACT/NSW Country will be seeking to repeat last year's performance where it shared the title with Queensland after the final was washed out.

The squad was selected from the 26 players that were divided into the Country Sixers and Thunder at the State Challenge also involving the NSW Metro Sixers and Thunder.

Metro named their squad on Tuesday.

Each team at the Under 17 National Championships this season will play four round-robin matches to qualify for the semi-finals.

McLay said performances at the State Challenge in Coffs Harbour made selection that much harder.

“It is pleasing to see the depth of quality players now in the ACT and NSW Country regions,” said McLay.

“We have Charles Mitchell, Jayden Zahra Smith and Harrison Townsend returning after having being involved in the joint National Title winning team from 2018.

“Connor Cook, a (Cricket Australia XI) representative from 2018, is also in the team and will be one of the key spin bowlers.”

Mitchell was the second leading run-scorer at the State Challenge last weekend. The opening batsman scored 166 runs at better than 55 from three matches.
