NSW Country selectors have chosen eight squads to represent the rural and regional areas of the state at the upcoming Under 13 and 14 Girls and Boys State Challenge starting on Monday.

The towns of Dubbo and Wellington will play host to the event next week. Two sides in each age division will represent the Sydney Sixers and Thunder franchises.

The two Thunder teams will represent South East and South West Country New South Wales, while the Sixers sides will have squads representing the Greater Hunter and Northern regions of the state.

The carnival will also encompass the inaugural Under 13 Girls State Challenge. The competition has been made possible by the financial support of the NSW Government through ICC World T20 2020 Cricket Legacy Fund.

The Boys’ carnival will finish on Thursday, while the Girls’ tournament takes place over Monday and Tuesday.

Daniel Thompson, who will play for the Under 14 Country Sixers Greater Hunter side, is one of the most promising talents involved at the State Challenge.

The right-arm fast bowler claimed 13 wickets at an astonishing average of 3.38 for the victorious Central Coast team during the recently held Under 14 Kookaburra Cup in Albury Wodonga. He was the leading wicket taker in the competition.

He only bowled in three of his five matches played and returned best figures of 6-17 against ACT/Southern Districts.

North Coastal batsman Jack Wakely was another excellent performer during the Kookaburra Cup.

Wakely, who has been selected for the Under 14 Country Sixers Northern NSW side, made 191 runs at 63.67. His tally included two fifties.

ACT/Southern Districts batter, Blake Faunce, finished the Kookaburra Cup with the best average of any batsman.

He averaged 82.5 and made 165 runs from five visits to the crease, including two half centuries. Faunce will represent Under 14 Country Thunder South East at the State Challenge in Dubbo and Wellington.

Faunce was also the leading run-scorer during the NSW Districts Cricket Association Under 14 Harold Moore Shield completed in December. He scored 481 runs at 80.17 including a highest score of 115 for ACT.

ACT/Southern Districts’ allrounder, Jake Smith, is one of the many emerging talents from Country NSW in the Under 13 age group.

He will represent Country Thunder South East in that age bracket. Smith was the equal leading wicket-taker throughout the 2018/19 NSWDCA Under 13 WS Gee Shield.

Smith collected 15 wickets at 9.27 including best figures of 4-15 for ACT during the Gee Shield. He finished equal with Dylan Ranjan from the Hornsby Ku-ringa-gai & Hills District Cricket Association.

Cricket NSW thanks Dubbo Regional Council for its support and organisation of the event.
