Raymond Terrace the destination, Marie Cornish Shield the prize. Eight representative teams from across regional NSW and ACT, stacked with emerging cricketing talent, travelled out to King Park to compete in the 2021 McDonald’s Under 16 Women’s Country Championships.

The two-day tournament held over December 20 and 21, showcased the batting and bowling skills of cricket’s rising superstars in a fast-paced Twenty20 format. Sure enough, the action was on display from day one, round one with Newcastle opener Kate McTaggart cruising to a match winning 46 not out to secure a win over Central Coast. Just a few strides away, North Coastal bowler Lara McMillan was ripping through the Central Northern line-up, finishing with figures of 5-6 off just 2.5 overs!

The second round was no different, with Riverina trio Alice Caldow (42 runs off 67 balls), Maggie Clark (3-3 from 2.4 overs) and Callie Metcalf (3-7 off 4 overs) producing the goods to ensure their side started two from two in Pool 1. Over in Pool 2, ACT Southern Districts lost just the 1 wicket chasing down Central Northern’s 80 runs and in doing so became the only other team to record consecutive wins.

The third and final regular round produced the highest individual score of the tournament, with Western’s Callee Black putting on an explosive 53 run innings which came off just 32 deliveries (one of which cleared the fence)!

So, the stage was set, Riverina versus ACT Southern Districts for the Marie Cornish Shield and title of McDonald’s Under 16 Women’s Country Champions.

ACT Southern Districts lost the toss but apart from that and three wickets, won pretty much everything else. Their bowling was on point with 5 different players grabbing wickets. Chloe McGann the pick of the bunch, finishing with unreal figures of 3-9 off her 4 overs and holding an undefeated Riverina side to 8/63 from their 20 overs.

The ACT Southern Districts batters then stepped up and completed the chase with 8.3 overs to spare.

Congratulations to ACT Southern Districts for winning their third U16 Women’s McDonald’s Country Championship in four years and to Chloe McGann, who was awarded Player of the Final.
