A five-wicket haul from spinner Stephen O’Keefe (5-80) had the NSW Blues striving for a fifth win from as many games but major rain delays saw the third day’s play against Victoria at the MCG limited to 50 overs on Sunday.
Victoria declared its first innings at 7/307 in reply to the Blues’ 294 with NSW set to face nine overs before stumps.
However, the light was good enough for spinner Jon Holland to bowl but not destructive seamers Peter Siddle or James Pattinson.
Play ended after Holland’s first over went for seven runs.
NSW will head into day four trailing by six runs at 0/7, with openers Daniel Hughes (1) and Nick Larkin (6) to resume.
Unfortunately for the Blues, and despite the day three heroics of O’Keefe, a result seems unlikely given that more rain is forecast for Monday morning.
O’Keefe took his first of five wickets on day two, trapping Marcus Harris lbw for 23 runs. He then went on to complete his haul, claiming the wickets of Will Pucovski (82), Matthew Short (40), Samuel Harper (1) and finally James Pattinson (9).
It was the veteran left arm spinner’s first five-wicket haul at the MCG.
