A detailed study has found that the NSW Breakers are the best professional sports team in NSW.

The Breakers, who have won 20 of the 23 Women’s National Cricket League titles, were the leading team in the state ahead of the Men’s Sydney FC Soccer team and Sydney Roosters Rugby League team.

Across Australasia the Breakers were ranked third behind the Canterbury Crusaders New Zealand Super Rugby team and Melbourne Storm NRL side.

Gain Line Analytics director and former Wallabies prop Ben Darwin said the analysis, which looked at 8,210 individual matches over 138 teams, was based on a number of key factors including the size of the competition.

“Finishing in the top three of an 18-team competition is like finishing first in a six-team competition,” Darwin said.

“The Breakers would basically have to win the competition every year to finish on top of our table.”

Darwin also said the stability of a team was important, with sides that have a significant influx of talent performing worse than teams which kept largely the same list.

Title victories were not given any more weight that regular season matches.

“We were looking for consistency,” Darwin said.

The Breakers have set the benchmark in women’s cricket since the WNCL began in 1996, failing to win the title just three teams.

They were the first Australian domestic women’s sporting team to go fully professional in 2016, with Cricket Australia making the WNCL and the Women’s Big Bash League fully professional the following year.
