Cricket NSW is proud to launch its first elite coaching apprenticeship program specifically designed for women.

With the support of Cricket Australia, the program aims to ensure the coaching development of women keeps pace with the rapidly expanding female game, which has exploded in recent times following the introduction of the Women’s Big Bash League.

Following an interview process, the three women selected for the first program are recently retired Breakers and Sixers stalwart Sarah Aley, Breakers and Sixers allrounder Lisa Griffith and recent Breakers squad member, wicketkeeper Hannah Trethewy.

The specially targeted program continues the progressive approach of NSW with women’s cricket.

The NSW Breakers have played in all 24 Women’s National Cricket League editions for 20 titles and the Sydney Thunder and Sydney Sixers have each won two of the six WBBL titles contested.

It comes off the back of Cricket NSW becoming the first state to create Head of Female Cricket and Head of Coaching Development positions.

Head of Female Cricket, Leah Poulton, a former Breakers and Australian player, is excited by the new program.

“There have never been more opportunities for women and girls to play cricket,” Poulton said.

“More than 30 percent of players at all levels and ages participating in cricket are now female.

“It’s important we create opportunities for women to contribute to our sport in a range of roles”. 

“The development of more female coaches, umpires and administrators is an important next step and can only enrich our great game

“I’m thrilled to have Hannah, Sarah and Lisa as part of our coaching team. All three are wonderful role models. Their energy and knowledge will be a great asset to our programs.”

Head of Coach Development, David Moore, coached the Breakers to title success in 2001/02, was a Cricket Australia Academy coach and acted as head coach of the West Indies.

Most recently he was Head of Cricket Performance at CNSW before taking up this newly created role last year.

“This program has been specially tailored to ensure that those chosen have the opportunity to experience the full range of coaching requirements.

“The ten-month internship will consist of presentations, webinars, field based learning and observations and networking with other high performance sports and their elite coaches.

“Opportunities with the field based learning will be across Blues and Breakers as well as male and female underaged pathway teams.

“They will also receive executive coaching and mentoring.”
