The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander T20 Cup will be held during NAIDOC Week, this Thursday and Friday, at Raby Sports Complex in Campbelltown.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men's and women's teams representing the Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder will contest the event with six matches across the two days alongside a range of cultural activities.

Through support of the Cricket NSW Foundation and funds raised during a community auction earlier this year, the T20 Cup will feature activities that promote connection to culture for players, families and the local community.

Players from both Sixers and Thunder men’s and women’s teams will be taking part in a barefoot circle to connect to country as a sign of commitment to walk together towards a more equitable and reconciled nation. This circle will be formed around the “Walkabout Wicket Logo” which both Sixers and Thunder WBBL teams are wearing on their jerseys.

The NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group’s Campbelltown committee will be performing for the players, with local Elders in attendance to perform a smoking ceremony and welcome the players from across the state to the Tharawal land on which the event will be held.

Local schools are invited to attend and take part in some cricket activities delivered by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players, as well as cultural engagement through the Australian Childhood Foundation, in the form of traditional painting.

“Sydney Thunder is excited to be hosting the two-day event, which will feature the best Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cricketers from our state, whilst providing an important connection to culture”, said Jake Balnave, Sydney Thunder Community Impact Specialist.

“With the support of the Cricket NSW Foundation, we are able to incorporate additional cultural activities to the program, which is central to the initiative.”

The Cricket NSW Foundation is the charitable arm of Cricket NSW and exists to support cricket in NSW and further accelerate the growth of the game. People can continue to support grassroots cricket initiatives through the Cricket NSW Foundation. When purchasing a Sydney Sixers or Sydney Thunder membership, additional donations can be made to further support cricket initiatives for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
