NSW Country came within touching distance of claiming the Under 17 Male National Championships title, narrowly going down to Queensland under the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern (DLS) method in a rain-affected final.
NSW Country edged in thrilling U17 final
Chasing Queensland’s 7-320 from 50 overs, NSW Country showed the attacking intent that had carried them through the tournament, despite losing two early wickets to Maroons quick Tom Vaseo.
Blake Cattle set the tone with a blistering 30 from just 15 balls, while Cooper Williams (45 from 32) and Samuel Davis (54 from 46) kept the chase on track as NSW Country surged towards the required rate with rain looming.
Queensland leg-spinner Spencer Green proved the difference, claiming 4-42 to apply the brakes and remove key batters as the contest swung back in the Maroons’ favour.
When play was eventually halted by the weather with NSW Country 7-162, Queensland were declared winners under DLS, bringing an end to a thrilling championship decider.
Despite the heartbreak in the final, both NSW teams enjoyed strong campaigns across the tournament.
NSW Metro were the pacesetters through the round matches, finishing the group stage undefeated before a tense one-wicket semi-final loss to NSW Country. Metro then contested the third-place play-off against Victoria Country, where they went down by seven wickets to finish fourth overall.
