Welcome to Tamworth Cricket Incorporated.
2008/09 Season
Cricket probably came to Tamworth with the employees of the Australian Agricultural Company in 1834, but no very early records exist. The first recorded cricket match in Tamworth was played on 24 May, 1859 when the single men of Tamworth Cricket Club played the married men of the same club for ten shillings, a bat and a dinner. For the recorded the single men won by 11 runs and the dinner was held at the Erin Inn (site of the Commonwealth Bank).
The first club match was held in early 1860 when Victoria Cricket Club defeated United Club by an innings and 77 runs.
District cricket in the north west had its origin in the 1860-61 season when 'Gunnedah' played 'Tamworth'. A side known as Loyld's XI from Burburgate Station near Gunnedah travelled to Tamworth to play a Tamworth selection. In a close encounter Tamworth prevailed in a low scoring match. Lloyds XI making 35 and 59 whilst Tamworth compiled 44 and 5 for 52 to win by 5 wickets.
The early Tamworth clubs included Tamworth United Cricket Club (1855), Victoria Cricket Club (1859), Endeavour Cricket Club (1882), Tamworth Athletic Crickey Club (1882) and Albion Cricket Club (1886) whilst Ironclads Club was formed in 1894 before changing its name to North Tamworth in 1895.
The Tamworth District Cricket Union was formed in 1900 to mange the game in Tamworth. It carried on its name until a new constitution was introduced in 1957 and the Tamworth District Cricket Association was established.
The Association and its predecessor has had a long and successful history due to the leadership of Mr W.F. Tribe, Mr H. Dunn, Dr E.B. Fitzpatrick (1921-27 & 1941-55), Mr A. Woolett, Mr A, Telfer, Mr E. Young, Mr M. Winder, Mr W. Wilson, Mr R. Stanley, Mr H. Varley, Mr C. Ashford, Mr N. Gardner, Mr Ken Falkenmire (1960-66), Mr Ian Southwell (1966-70), Mr G. Dunn, Mr W. Cupitt, Mr F. Pethebridge, Mr W, Dockrill, Mr Ross Taylor, Mr B. Skewes, Mr S. Chillingworth, Mr W. Garrard and Mr Terry Psarakis in recent years.
A six team first grade competition has been conducted since the 1960-61 season with the following clubs participating - Norths, Souths, Attunga/City United, Police Boys/Brumbys/Blues/Old Boys, Bective East and West Leagues. The symbol of first grade supremacy is the Wombramurra Rose Bowl dating from 1927.
