Lendease Breakers Sarah Aley (32) and Belinda Vakarewa (19) are in line to make their One-Day International debuts for the Southern Stars during the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup, taking place in England and Wales from 23 June.

The pace bowling duo were named alongside five of their Lendlease Breakers teammates: Alex Blackwell, Ashleigh Gardner, Rachael Haynes, Alyssa Healy and Ellyse Perry, in the 15-strong Southern Stars player squad chosen by Cricket Australia today (Thursday).

A promising young fast bowler chosen for this year’s Shooting Stars tour of Sri Lanka, Vakarewa played most of the matches during her first season for the Lendlease Breakers. On debut in the opening game, a rematch of the previous season’s final against South Australia, Belinda claimed 1-12 from six overs then hung on batting at No.11 for a thrilling one wicket victory.

Speaking on their selection, National Selector Shawn Fledger commented, “Belinda Vakarewa is an exciting young talent who has made the most of the opportunities that have come her way with the Shooting Stars and more recently during the three-week camp held in Brisbane. She adds some extra firepower with her pace and we’re excited to see what she can do.”

“Sarah Aley will also add some extra depth to our bowling attack and brings an incredible amount of experience to the group which is invaluable in a tournament like this.”

The reliable veteran had an outstanding season with the ball. After claiming 11 wickets in the WNCL to finish as the most successful Lendlease Breakers bowler, she claimed a tournament high 28 wickets for the Sydney Sixers in the WBBL 02 at an average of just 11.75. She finished seven wickets ahead of any other bowler in the competition, with a best of 4-23 in the final.

The Southern Stars are looking to add a seventh World Cup title to their list of achievements, after winning the tournament for a record sixth time in 2013 when they defeated the West Indies by 114 runs in the final in India.

Blackwell, Healy, Haynes and Perry were all part of the Southern Stars squad who won the tournament for a record sixth time in 2013, after defeating the West Indies by 114 runs in the final in India.

“This is an incredibly exciting time for this team, with the chance to stake their claim as one of the most successful sporting teams in Australian sport,” continued Fletcher.

The squad will finalise their preparations during a two-week camp beginning in Brisbane on Monday, with the second week to take place on the Sunshine Coast.
