NSW Blues coach Trent Johnston has announced the NSW Blues squad for the 2017/18 season.

With two new Blues contracted players, three new rookies and six Australian contracted players, the squad has great depth of talent and a healthy mix of youth and experience – something which will come to bear as they look to retain the JLT One Day Cup and make a stand for the JLT Sheffield Shield.

The new additions to the NSW Blues squad of 20 contracted players for the coming season are fast bowlers Charlie Stobo and Henry Thornton.

Stobo, 22, the son of former NSW fast bowler Richard Stobo, came from outside the state squad last season to make a spectacular first class debut.

The tall right armer claimed seven wickets against South Australia in Adelaide last December but was then hindered by injury during the second half of the season.

A former Australia Under 19 representative Thornton, 20, is a quick and exciting fast bowler who has been upgraded from the NSW rookie list.

Thornton's talent was identified at an early age when he was selected in the U/13 Cricket NSW Academy Program.

During the 2015/16 summer, Thornton was part of the NSW Metro team which won the U/19 Male National Championships, and he was subsequently selected in the Australian U/19 team for a series against England in Perth.

He was the leading wicket taker during the ODI section of that tour, snaring 13 scalps at 13.46.

NSW Blues coach Trent Johnston praised Charlie Stobo for his step up.

“Charlie Stobo has been very impressive in Grade cricket and we identified him quite early as someone of huge interest for us,” Johnston said.

“His line and length bowling is very good. He’s a huge talent.”

Australian captain Steve Smith, vice-captain David Warner, fast bowlers Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins and spinner Nathan Lyon have Cricket Australia contracts.

Jordan Gauci, Dan Fallins and Param Uppal have all been added to the NSW rookie list.

Gauci and Uppal are top order batsmen who have represented the Australian Under19s while Fallins is a leg-spinner who is part of Cricket Australia’s National Performance Squad.
