New South Wales and Australian batsman Michael Slater was awarded Life Membership of Cricket NSW at an historic annual meeting on Monday night.

Along with honouring Slater for his contribution to NSW and Australian cricket, The meeting endorsed major constitutional reform to enhance Cricket NSW as a leader in sport by opening board membership to a wide range of high achievers across the community.

Cricket NSW Chairman John Warn presented Slater with his Life Membership.

“Michael was an exciting opening batsman for NSW and Australia who thrilled cricket audiences around the world with his daring stroke play,” Mr Warn said.

“By kissing the Coat of Arms on his helmet at Lord’s after scoring a century in just his second Test Michael began a modern trend which highlighted how much playing for Australia meant to him.

“Michael is one of many fine sportsmen who hail from Wagga, including prominent Australian players Mark Taylor and Geoff Lawson, both of whom spoke to his induction.”

Slater described receiving his life membership as “an incredible honour.”

“I’ve extremely proud to become a Cricket NSW Life Member,” he said.

Three of the nine Cricket NSW board directors are currently appointed and the other six were previously elected from a pool of only 34 delegates. The constitutional changes allow delegates to nominate anyone for board positions with the support of their club, zone or association.

Mr Warn commended the Cricket NSW delegates for opening up to the selection of board members.

“These historic changes will ensure Cricket NSW draws on the widest and deepest possible talent pool for the board,” Mr Warn said.

“This will allow Cricket NSW to attract the best and most diverse pool of candidates possible for board positions while ensuring candidates continue to have an appropriate connection to NSW cricket.”

Grade stalwart David Thompson was elected as a replacement on the Cricket NSW board for a one-year term following the recent retirement of Dr David Dilley.
