In a first for Australian cricket free coaching courses will be available to all NSW cricket enthusiasts this summer.

Beginning in August, the free Community (Level 1) courses are expected to attract more than 3,000 people across the country during the 2017/18 season - a massive boost in support of grassroots cricket.

The initiative will develop coaching skills around Australia, with an emphasis on junior cricket, by making the courses more accessible to parents, volunteers and all budding cricket coaches.

David Moore, Cricket NSW General Manager of Cricket Performance, welcomed the ground-breaking program.

This is a wonderful initiative by Australian cricket to upskill junior cricket coaches in Australia. Without people putting their hand up to coach teams many of our grassroots participants would not be able to play the game,” Mr Moore said.

“The fact that we can now provide those wonderful volunteers a chance to learn more about the game and the art of coaching free of charge is a great way of assisting in the improved experience our grassroots cricketers will receive.”

The free coaching course, usually costs $120 per person.

“We are proud to partner with Cricket Australia in making this ground-breaking initiative come to fruition and have the opportunity to boost the quality and quantity of grassroots coaches. Cricket NSW currently accredits approximately 700 community cricket coaches per year, with this program we hope to dramatically increase this number,” Mr Moore said.

Cricket Australia’s Head of Junior Cricket, Belinda Clark, said, “Grassroots cricket is the lifeblood of cricket in Australia, and we are committed to investing at this level. While some associations have been supporting coaches to obtain accreditation, the chance to approach this nationally and provide the opportunity across Australia is important.”

“We want all Australian cricket participants to have an enjoyable and safe experience, and ensuring our grassroots coaches have the training and resources to be able to provide this is important.”

All courses are run by accredited staff trained by Cricket Australia. The course is accredited by the Australian Sports Commission and endorsed by the International Cricket Council.

The Community coaching course also provides coaches with access to online resources, and will include training on the revised Junior Formats which are currently being introduced around Australia.

People can register for the free course by signing up online at the Cricket Australia Coaching website, completing an online Introduction to the course and selecting a course in their region.
