Seven talented new players have joined current WNCL champions the Lendlease Breakers for the 2017/18 season. This swells the Breakers ranks to a 19-strong squad, which includes eight Australian caps, and is primed for a successful defence of the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) title.

Lendlease Breakers Coach Joanne Broadbent comments, “We’ve got an exciting summer of cricket coming up with 19 really talented players in our squad this year.”

For Carly Leeson (18), Hannah Trethewy (18), Mikayla Hinkley (19), Rachel Trenaman (16), Saskia Horley (17) and Tahlia Wilson (17) this will be their first season as Lendlease Breakers after making their mark in the NSW Pathways program, NSW Women’s Premier Cricket and WBBL.

Lisa Griffith meanwhile is a welcome returning face to the squad. Having taken some time off from the game, the pace-bowler has returned full of vigour, grit and determination.

For these seven athletes 2017/18 will be their first season as professional sportswomen. The Lendlease Breakers championed the professionalisation of Australian sportswomen and revolutionised the domestic women’s sports scene when Cricket NSW announced that they would be professionalising the Lendlease Breakers at the start of the 2016/17 season.

This paved the way for the rest of Australia’s domestic women’s sports who have since launched women’s domestic leagues and taken the much-needed steps to professionalise their sports.

The Lendlease Breakers, arguably the most successful team in Australian domestic women’s sports history with 18 of 21 WNCL titles under their belts, will once again be led by Alex Blackwell (Captain) and Ellyse Perry (Vice-captain).

The combination of Blackwell and Perry has proved to be leadership magic both on and off the field. Together they guide the team with steady hands and can draw upon a wealth of experience from both a domestic and international level.

Broadbent concluded, “We have an incredible depth of talent in the squad, with a diverse mix of players, youth and experience this year. Both the players and staff are looking forward to the new season format and the challenges that lie ahead.”

The Lendlease Breakers squad for 2017/18 are: Alex Blackwell (Captain), Ellyse Perry (Vice captain), Alyssa Healy, Belinda Vakarewa, Carly Leeson, Hannah Trethewy, Lauren Cheatle, Lauren Smith, Lisa Griffith, Maisy Gibson, Mikayla Hinkey, Naomi Stalenberg, Nicola Carey, Rachel Trenaman, Rachael Haynes, Rene Farrell, Sarah Aley, Saskia Horley and Tahlia Wilson.
