The latest group of 15 Basil Sellers Scholars brings to more than 100 the number of exciting young male and female cricketers to benefit from the generous program.

They were inducted during a presentation evening at the SCG on Tuesday.

Of the 108 talented teenagers from the 12 annual intakes, 16 have represented Australia with Ashleigh Gardner the most recent last season.

Along with Gardner fellow former scholars Ellyse Perry and Alyssa Healy were all part of Australia’s Women’s World Cup squad during the year.

Former male scholars Steve Smith, Usman Khawaja, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins were chosen for the Test squad touring Bangladesh while Sam Robson played Test cricket for England and Tom Cooper and Timm van der Gugten represented the Netherlands.

Cricket NSW chairman John Warn said the Basil Sellers Scholarship Program has allowed some of the state’s most exciting young cricketers to concentrate on pursuing an elite cricket career while reducing the burden on families.

“This has included the cost of travelling to and from training, relocating from regional areas to Sydney and assisting with the cost of secondary or tertiary education,” Mr Warn said.

“I would like to thank Basil for the enormous contribution he has made to the game at a state and national level.”

Mr Sellers said there are few more exciting achievements in cricket that making a century.

“It is with great delight then that I welcome the 100th Basil Sellers scholar to the program this season,” Mr Sellers said.

“Congratulations to all of the 2017/18 scholars and a special mention to the families who have done so much to support their children in pursuit of sporting excellence.

“Like all the Scholars before you, I will follow your progress with keen interest.”
