Maitland & District Cricket Association Inc
2008/09 Season Established 1894 The Maitland & District Cricket Association welcomes all those players participating in the 2007 - 2008 cricket season. The Association welcomes aboard TYGEAR MAINTENANCE P/L as its major sponsor. Cricket has been played in the Maitland district since the 1840s. George Moore, grandfather of the great Charlie Macartney, was a leading player and major influence on the game in the early years. He played for HH Stephenson's first touring England XI and represented NSW against Parr's XI (1863-64) and WG Grace's XI (1873-74). In many ways Moore was the 'father of cricket' in the district, playing with the Pearl Club in Maitland until he was 75. The idea of forming an Association to manage cricket in the Maitland district began to grow in the 1880s. In July 1889 the Hunter River Cricket Association was established with Mr Harry Cohen as the first President and six clubs - Albion, Pearl, Dungog, Greta, Oakhampton and Northumberland as the intial affiliates. The move proved to be premature for this Association - its existance was short lived. At its first Annual Meeting in September 1890 it reported that it had not received the support anticipated by the clubs - by mid way through the 1892-93 season it faded out of existence. The idea of an Association was revieved in 1894 and this time the Association formed was much more successful than its predecessor. The Hunter District Cricket Association was formed at a meeting in Kerrigan's Centennial Hotel on 10 September, 1894. The foundation executive was Percy M. Waddy (President), John Kerrigan (Secretary) and Bill Lindsay (Treasurer). The Association had its peaks and troughs over the years. Competition was suspended during the Great War and again from 1941 to 1945 during World War II. Its reformation on 18 September, 1945 signalled a revival of cricket in the region. The 1956-57 season marked the start of a new era and a name change for the Association. At the 1956 Annual Meeting it was decided to change the name of the Association from the "Hunter River District Cricket Association" to the "Maitland & District Cricket Association". The term 'Hunter' was considered confusing, whereas 'Maitland' gave the association an identity. Changes also occurred in the competition format with a return to club cricket - district cricket and residential qualifications being abandoned. The Association enjoyed an increase in participating teams and with re-introduction of finals in 1957-58 the interest in cricket boomed. The Association has always played a major role in NSW Country, NSW and Ausralian cricket. Over the years eleven Maitland cricketers have played at the first class level.
