Bankstown Sports finished off the preliminary rounds of the 2009/10 Sydney Women’s First Grade competition in emphatic style with an eight wicket double bonus point win over Gordon in which fast bowler, Sharon Millanta claimed an amazing 9-11 from 10 overs (March 14).
Millanta, who is easily the form bowler in women’s Grade at the moment, skittled the young Gordon side for just 58 in 26 overs. Unfortunately the NSW Breakers’ veteran missed on a perfect 10, with fellow opening bowler Melissa Penman claiming the last wicket of the innings, Emma Thompson for 31.
Bankstown Sports reached the victory target in 19 overs to maintain their undefeated record.
Gordon now has a week to recover before they face Bankstown again, this time in the Semi Finals. Minor Premiers by a country mile, Bankstown Sports are raging favourites to secure a third consecutive First Grade title.
However Gordon has made big strides this season. This weekend’s result aside, they have been in good form and will look to the likes of Hannah Perry, Hannah Trollip and Emma Thompson to help pick them off the canvas.
The other First Grade Semi Final will be played between St George-Sutherland and Campbelltown Camden.
Both sides had victories in their last round match with St George-Sutherland downing Eastern Suburbs by 11 runs, despite the best efforts of Easts and NSW player Erin Osborne who took three wickets and made a run-a-ball 86.
Campbelltown-Camden beat Northern District by 96 runs in their clash. Campbelltown-Camden made 5-236 from their 50 overs thanks to an outstanding 106 from 112 balls from NSW Second XI player, Kate Waetford.
St George-Sutherland will be favourites heading into the Semi Final after finishing runners up last year. But like Gordon, Campbelltown-Camden is more than capable of springing an upset with young guns like Waetford, Sarah Coyte, Kara Sutherland and Lisa Griffith in their line-up.
In the last match of the round, Universities (5-156) ended their season on a high by accounting for Sydney (155).
The final competition ladder saw Bankstown Sports (98 points) finish on top with 13 wins and a draw from their 14 matches. St George-Sutherland (56), Campbelltown-Camden (49) and Gordon (46) round out the top four.
Sydney (34), Universities (22), Eastern Suburbs (15) and Northern District (14) finished in the bottom half.
The venues for the Semi Finals will be announced later in the week.
One title that has already been decided is the 2009/10 Club Championship which has gone to the St George-Sutherland Club. They have broken the stranglehold Bankstown has had on this Trophy for the last two seasons.
