The NSW 2nd X1 team has had to work hard for their runs on a disrupted first day of the four-day 2nd X1 match against Western Australia. This was the first senior representative match to be held at Blacktown Olympic Park.

The heavy recent rain in Sydney prevented play from getting underway until 2.40pm. NSW lost the toss and were sent in to bat under overcast skies. Openers Nic Maddinson (13) and Steve Cazzulino got the side off to a cautious start against some accurate seam bowling on the benign batting surface.

Cazzulino was joined by 2nd X1 debutant Tim Sparke, as the pair combined in a fine second wicket partnership of 65. Cazzulino carried on his good recent form scoring a busy 61, including four boundaries, to leave the score at 2-107.

Sparke and captain Peter Nevill (19) continued to steadily build the total as scoring became increasingly difficult as the wicket became slower. Unfortunately, both were dismissed in the last half hour of the day as NSW finished on 4-167 from 66 overs. Sparke impressed with his technique and composure in scoring 55 featuring five boundaries.

Not out batsman Phillip Wells (10 ) and Adam Crosthwaite (3), will be looking to build on the total today if the weather stays dry.
